Trenton Area Soup Kitchen
Trenton, New Jersey
Founded in 1982, the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) is a non-profit service organization devoted to feeding the hungry and promoting food security throughout New Jersey’s capitol region. TASK serves over 200,000 meals per year, and also provides adult education resources, music and arts programs, and hosts community events year-round.
TASK’s original one-story building was constructed in 1991. Mills + Schnoering Architects was engaged to renovate the existing building and design an addition to accommodate the organization’s expanded programs. The new 3,700 sf addition, sited to the east of the existing TASK building, houses a pair of dedicated adult education classrooms; computer room; administrative offices; conference room; and an open meeting/performance area. The existing building was renovated to include additional offices, added storage, and multipurpose space. On the exterior, a deep overhang above the sidewalk shelters patrons during inclement weather, and an all-glass storefront system on the side provides views to a community garden on the adjacent property. Shortly after completion of the new addition, M+Sa returned to TASK to renovate and expand the organization’s kitchen.
